These testimonials go back several years and reflect for me certainly, and perhaps the reader too, on some very memorable battlefield tours with some very interesting guests.
A few examples of fair and treasured memories that will long remind me of a rich and rewarding part of my life are:.
- Salamanca with Pensioners from the Royal Hospital Chelsea
- Austerlitz 200th Anniversary with Sylvia Peck from the USA
- Bullecourt & Polygon Wood with Australian Dean Callas and cadets from the Royal Military College Duntroon & Australian Defence Force Academy
- David Winn at Loos
- Chris Scott at Ramillies
- Waterloo with Don McNeeley from Ontario, 'In the Footsteps of his ancestor James Morrison',
- The Richard Hale Association at Ypres following the way of the Herts Guards 31 July 1917

'Your contribution was
absolutely invaluable, most particularly in using your detailed
knowledge of the Peninsular War battlefields to orientate us and to
describe what happened all those years ago. As I said, it helps
enormously to have someone who knows what they are talking about.
Very many thanks for devoting so much of your time and effort to
us.'

Ride to the Peninsular War - 6-10 Oct 08
'I was very impressed with the scope & scale of the whole trip & it
more than matched my expectations. The leader’s ability to gain
access to places & people added variety & interest and was an
additional dimension. His ability to convey sufficient information
to grasp both strategic & tactical issues at various stages was very
helpful to my understanding and his intimate knowledge of the units
& their dispositions inspired great confidence. Well organised,
flexible but still focussed on the tour objectives.

Many thanks for looking
after the ARK ROYAL Command Group so magnificently at Waterloo. It
was so kind of you to get up so early and, I am sure, get home so
late and give us a battlefield tour that was full of relevance for
the challenges we face today – at sea! I speak for the whole team
when I say that our thoughts on leadership have been really
invigorated by our ten hours replaying a land battle under your
expert tutorage. It really was very good and we are all extremely
grateful to you.

"Miracle of Dunkirk", Excellent day, couldn't be any better. As before, the quality of the

the amazing feats carried out in terrible conditions, by all involved.

Dunkirk – Saturday 30th June 2007
'I must record the appreciation of the Club for the magnificent way in which you arranged this
tour especially for us. Your outstanding and detailed knowledge of the strategy of the battle,
the topography of the ground, the characters and techniques involved; which together with your
superb ability to present it in a riveting way will leave us a lasting and most favourable memory.
Everything we asked you to do was done. We were delighted with your response to our requirement
for a very comfortable coach and driver. We appreciated your care for our less active members
such as accommodating their pace and lending one of them your own jersey when he forgot his.
Also, we appreciated too the little extras, such as the unscheduled coffee break you gave
us, the private viewing of La Haie Sainte, interceding with the hotel when one of the meals
was not quite as one would expect from a 4–star establishment: and then of course, there was
the surprise attack from the Imperial Guard! Our members appreciated and enjoyed too the contribution
by Anne Grimshaw, with her story of "Weaver to Waterloo" and her conversations about the times.
We are very grateful to you Graeme.

Fantastic.. Graeme brought to life the emotions and experiences of Billy's' time at the front

lesson to being a very memorable experience. Amazing… Although now I cry whenever I see a war

Absolutely fantastic Graeme. You were bombarded with lots of questions and more than rose to
the challenge. The tour was an emotional experience for the family and you totally brought it
to life for us. We have many memories that will stay with us thanks to you. I enjoyed learning
about how all the Regiments played a part in the war, the reading of Lt Hodgson of the Devon

First class, an extremely knowledge and informative tour, following in the footsteps of my uncle

The subject was exceedingly well presented and the itinerary very well thought out. Very knowledgeable
guiding with appropriate materials, well devised route as well as ensuring that interest was continually
maintained (or concentration should I say) that helped link all the various stories together to create
the bigger picture. Had a fantastic few days and will be taking home a new level of knowledge and
understanding of what was such an awful sacrifice. The trip has given so much more that a holiday can.
Thank you.

Graeme – very many thanks for providing yet another excellent Battlefield Tour. The attending
"Chunderers" were all suitably impressed and many were still commenting on the excellent programme
as they left the bus last night – and it's quite right that they should do so. You and Mike make
an excellent team and, as individuals who are clearly independent of the Sqn, your comments reinforce
and expand the work conducted by the permanent staff. I am most grateful to you both for all your
efforts, whether it is sorting out the meal tickets or conjuring–up the horrors of the battlefield.
You make my trip very easy and most enjoyable.

University Leadership Tour of Somme and Ypres 10–12 Nov 2006
First of all a huge thank you from all the Wolstenholme's for such a fantastic trip to the battle
fields of the Great War. It really was such a special few days for us all. I personally learnt so
much and was fascinated to relate some of the leadership and decision making aspects of such a complex
and massive campaign to today's world.
Such a lesson to us all, and such a great way to receive it by visiting the places where it all took
place. We are indebted to you for making it possible, and for making it real, and for getting everybody
involved. I will remember always the walk to where Arthur died, and to read the letters about his
death on the way there. When I read my own Grandfathers log book 'the road to Serre' means so much
more now. As you said at the start, your job was to show us the ground and to tell us the story –
we had to use our imagination and somehow put in our own context. You did a brilliant job.

Thanks so much for the photos, they turned out really good didn't they! I had a terrific time that
day & have certainly been derelict in sending my thanks to you. When I got home that evening I rang
my brother & we talked for about two hours about everything I had learned from you. I can now truly
understand the glowing testimonials you receive on your website. Walking the battlefield with you
was a unique experience ..... I had the uncanny feeling that I was with someone who had been there
on the day. Thank you very much for that. Hope to see you again soon.

top – enjoyable, informative, challenging in scope and so many new things.

Believe your tours are more personable than one would find in more established tours. One also feels some of the interactions we had with the locals & unexpected developments were both revealing and part of the charm. Especially felt Ali's presence was soothing and civilizing. All the guest speakers were utterly pleasant and delightful. Waterloo I knew but you still expanded my horizons. Austerlitz proved far more memorable ,magical, complex and rewarding than I hoped. Also thought our little band of travellers was a splendid mix.

200th Anniversary Tour Austerlitz – 30 Nov – 7 Dec 2005
Some old Sandhurst buffer, all tangled up in 'ow true the ground is, never you mind the ground wasn't 'arf covered in snow. He spent the evening of the 1st rousting troops to advance on some bloody hillock in the bejeesus AM, just because Bonaparte 'ad stood there 200 years ago–Crikey, 'e probably got there earlier in the AM than Boney done himself. And no–one drowned in some ponds or lakes at the end of the battle – blimey, if they'd 'a been drained then, like they be now, no wonder nobody would 'a drowned! Actually, quite enjoyable and very knowledgeable. I'd heard earlier about the value of your contacts, but I thought they truly made the trip, on and off the battlefields. I think the opportunity to see otherwise unavailable or closed museums and sites made the trip. Thank John for me. Without the night time Vienna orientation, I might still be wandering Vienna. Really appreciated the trip notes. Pleased, overall. Don't know if I will do another Napoleonic battlefield tour, but I may. I am not a battlefield fanatic. I wouldn't have missed this tour for worlds.

200th Anniversary Tour Austerlitz – 30 Nov – 7 Dec 2005
A peak experience – and a great group – probably not to be surpassed. Simply outstanding – I especially appreciate the ability to improvise, which is how a tour of this sort should be run, I think. We didn't know for sure what was going to happen, and by maintaining flexibility and exercising on–the–spot judgment to make changes in the itinerary, we were able to capture some very special experiences – e.g., the encounter with the Emperor at 7:30 am on the Zuran on Dec 2… A more "structured" tour would have missed these things… George Calhoun, New York
200th Anniversary Tour Austerlitz – 30 Nov – 7 Dec 2005
'To arrive in darkness, with the smell of snow, and pavement and anticipation; to then sleep in a fog of jetlag, and a foreign landscape reminiscent of the snow–laden firs of childhood and the kind of light which painters prize and dash. Then to witness and become part of the unfolding story – this is living history. To learn the richness and complexity of battle by vantage points and angles and slipping over ice, to feel one's imagination whipped up at the intersection of strategy, horseflesh and death, and loyalty and terror, squares and bayonets (you or him) and the 3 Pounder and 6 pounders all of it exhorted out of the climate, frost, fog and the Sun of Austerlitz by a born teacher, a maestro of suggestion, 'Here the drums!' 'There the bugle!' 'Here the lines', the vineyards, the important ground – enthusiastic arms invoking the storyteller's spell: so that every ear listening is given opportunity to PONDER what cost ? always in the ever to–be–decoded. Mystery of courage, of uncertainty, of risk, of weather, of wind – Thank–you.'
(This is my Shakespearean salute) on the 200th Anniversary of Austerlitz – a likeness captured while describing story after story at a dinner I thought I'd be too tired to eat.

"Battlefields of the World" / Sydney Australia – Royal Military College Duntroon & Australian Defence Force Academy – European Leadership Tour 1–16 July 2005
Personally, I'd have to say that the farewell night in Arras was one of the defining moments of the trip. I know that you intended it to be that way, and I certainly think that it turned out to be the big send off that we had all hoped for. That and Bastille Day of course! From the actual tour... Bullecourt, Pozieres, and Villers–Bretonneux were definite stand–outs. To be brutally honest, I would have thought that it would have taken an Australian to recount Jacka's charge at the Windmill so clearly and with such fervour... but it appears that a British tour guide proved me wrong. I see history as it is taught in a classroom differently now... nothing teaches you better than walking the ground. I appreciate the actions of our soldiers even more now having walked their footsteps. The sheer scale of the sacrifice made by soldiers of all nations on the battlefields of Western Europe – I don't think the numbers were comprehensible to me until I saw the hundreds and hundreds of cemeteries and the full magnitude of the sacrifice hit me. Thanks again for the tour Coops... it was brilliant!

'Excellent. Enthusiastic and highly knowledgeable. Judged the needs of the group from the outset and delivered exactly what was required. Did not just impart knowledge but e ngaged in discussion and encouraged contribution from the group giving them real ownership of the tour. There was a great deal more than that specified in the itinerary. Every tour with Cooper's is different as it is tailored to the group. A fantastic experience: from military strategy and tactics of both the Allies and the Germans to the very poignant and personal accounts of individuals in the Normandy campaign. Nothing beats talking to a veteran at Pegasus Bridge'.

Richard Dreissen – Los Angeles California USA – Napoleon's Waterloo Anniversary Tour 18–23 June 2003
"As a humble devotee to Napoleonic studies, please allow me to address your esteemed alliance with some enthusiastic comments about our 5–day June 18 Waterloo campaign anniversary tour led by Major Graeme Cooper. Although I've toured the Waterloo Battlefield on four previous occasions, including two stays at the 1815 hotel located at the Ohain crossroads, until I toured with Major Cooper it is if I had never been there before. We followed the hop, skip and jump of the French crossings from Fosteau to Charleroi; stood where D'Erlon's Corps should have arrived at Ligny; paid our respect to the new British monument at Quatr Bras, and enjoyed inside visits to Hougoumont, La Haye Sainte, Papelotte, (even Ney's Headquarters). We stood at innumerable locations including Genappe, La Belle Alliance and Napoleon's ridge to be lectured by the Major as what could be seen according to the sequence of events. I shall never forget the marches up to Wellington's ridge reminding me of John Keegan's "Face of Battle".
Even though I'm an admitted closet Bonapartist, Major Cooper exhibited unusual reverence for the great man despite his admiration for the Duke of Wellington and his support of the "German Victory" theory, perhaps because his parent regiment "The Green Howards" were in Ceylon at the time. It was also quite evident from the local receptions that Major Cooper uses his local contacts wisely, I do believe that he could march a thousand Imperial Guard re–enactors on Brussels by the drop of his hat. NATO officers have been lucky to have Major Cooper as its personal tour guide.
My Waterloo Campaign tour with Major Cooper is the highlight of my 40––plus years of Napoleonic studies. Thank you for the opportunity to comment together with all your membership does to promote Napoleonic History, my most fervent hope is that "Napoleon" Magazine will return, at least for the 200th anniversary of the 100 days! "We of the Napoleonic faction salute you! Your tour is the apex of my 40 year Napoleonic study. Most appreciatively, your friend, fellow enthusiast and advocate"

"The tour guide, Graeme Cooper, brought history to life in an interesting, thought provoking and sensitive way and held 46 people totally spellbound. He told the events of the war in a historically factual way, whilst sharing with all on the trip the pathos and emotion which cannot be avoided when looking back at those terrible years."

Miranda Drewry, Rheindahlen and HQ ARRC Ladies to Waterloo – 19th June 2002

"The Belgian hiccups and sunburn served not at all to dull the sheen of the occasion improved so much by the quality of the guide. It was amazing to be able to live the battle as if in the ranks on the day and survive, this even after being charged by some re–enacting cuirassiers! Money was never better spent and will, I hope, have occasion so to be again."
Bill Little Association of Friends of the Waterloo Committee Tour 16–19 June 2000
"What an experience. To be there on the day itself and to see the Imperial Guard present was wonderful; in Graeme you have found a jewel, in the heat of the day he made everything come alive, even though we didn't make all the walks."
Max Vernon and Lucy Miller– Association of Friends of the Waterloo Committee Tour 16–19 June 2000
"We have been on almost 20 battlefield tours over the years but I can honestly say that none have given us as much pleasure as the trip to Waterloo. The arrangements worked like clockwork, the company was very good and Graeme Cooper a most informative guide."
Bill & Sylvia Marsh –Association of Friends of the Waterloo Committee Tour 16–19 June 2000
"It absolutely poured with rain the whole time and the shuttle was seriously delayed but t hanks to the magnificent Graeme Cooper everyone had a terrific time. He was brilliant! If I can be guaranteed he will lead the tour I will go every year. Congratulations on an excellent level of service."
Dr David Hipshon – St James Independent School
"There is no doubt that it could not have been done as effectively without your keen insight into military history and your outstanding ability to present your knowledge in such a way offering a perfect balance of fact and analysis, and in such a digestible form. You had a difficult task in satisfying the needs of a varied group and it was very much due to your credit that not only was the tour academically and professionally rewarding but it also offered a perfect opportunity to engage the civilian component of the Headquarters in understanding military matters."
General J D Moore–Bick CBE. GOC Headquarters United Kingdom Support Command (Germany)
"Excellent best yet. Will definitely book again".
C Roscoe
"What a leader and inspiration! He took us 'over the top' at Serre on the Somme and his information flow was non stop action. He gave tutorials, mini scenarios, re–enactment of actual events and was compassionate and understanding when events were inevitably sad and made one despondent. His inside information on the military thinking of events was second to none. He gave us poetry, literature references, quotations , maps. What an excellent communicator. We salute him!" On behalf of the Manchester Pals – Pte John Richardson

Gordon Alcock–Association of Friends of the Waterloo Committee Tour 16–19 June 2000
I taught 19th Century history for fifteen years, often to not overenthusiastic adolescents and it was difficult to convince them that history was just not remembering dates. I found myself wishing that they could have been with me hearing you bring this great event to life. Your love of this period of history and your enthusiasm would have created a whole new slant on the subject for them as it did for me. All the tour was alive with atmosphere as it was easy to leave the 21st Century behind and travel back nearly 200 years in time. We spent a remarkable few days with you which we shall never forget.
Graham BA (Honours) History. University of London
"I have been there several times before, but your superb analysis and description of the events of June 1815 truly brought the battle to life."

"You were instrumental in overcoming our disappointment in the lack of a major re–enactment. Besides rendering Muffling a new heroic image, I have a new appreciation of what the torrents of rain on June 17 must have been like. I have every intention of returning to Waterloo where I hope to join one of your tours.
Mike Driessen USA
Having such a guide as Graeme Cooper for the Saturday, who gave such a description of the events, along with his passion for the subject, made us visualise the battle and was one of the highlights of the weekend. For him to give up his Sunday appointment to be with us and walk the battlefield for those of us that did not go to Brussels was an added bonus..
Steve Moore and Elizabeth Thompson–Association of Friends of the Waterloo Committee Tour 16–19 June 2000
